Ask Mode vs Agent Mode: Understanding the Safety-First Approach to AI Terminals
A deep dive into SysNav's dual-mode architecture — why separating exploration from execution is essential for AI-powered infrastructure tools.
When we designed SysNav, we faced a fundamental question: how much autonomy should an AI have when interacting with production infrastructure?
The answer isn’t binary. Sometimes you want the AI to explain. Sometimes you want it to act. The key insight is that these are fundamentally different operations with different risk profiles, and they should be treated as such.
Ask Mode: The Safe Exploration Space
Ask Mode is SysNav’s read-only intelligence layer. It processes your questions, analyzes context, and provides detailed answers — but never executes anything. Think of it as having an experienced senior SRE sitting next to you, available to answer any question.
What Ask Mode can do:
- Explain error messages in context
- Suggest debugging approaches based on your infrastructure topology
- Analyze log patterns and correlate events across services
- Generate commands for you to review before execution
- Explain the implications of a configuration change
What Ask Mode cannot do:
- Execute any command
- Modify any file
- Send any network request
- Access any system it shouldn’t
This separation is enforced architecturally, not just by prompting. Ask Mode literally does not have execution capabilities.
Agent Mode: Supervised Autonomy
Agent Mode is where SysNav acts on your behalf — but always with your explicit approval. When activated, the agent can:
- Investigate — Read logs, check service status, query metrics
- Correlate — Connect symptoms across multiple services and time windows
- Diagnose — Identify root causes and contributing factors
- Propose — Present a remediation plan with expected outcomes
- Execute — Carry out the approved plan with full audit trailing
The critical word is “approved.” Agent Mode never executes a remediation without explicit human confirmation. It presents its analysis, explains its reasoning, and waits for your go-ahead.
Why Not Just One Mode?
Many AI tools offer a single mode that tries to be both helpful and safe. The result is usually a compromise that’s neither particularly helpful nor particularly safe.
By separating modes, we achieve two things:

Ask Mode can be maximally helpful — It doesn’t need to worry about accidentally executing something dangerous, so it can freely explore hypotheses, suggest aggressive debugging approaches, and analyze sensitive configurations.

Agent Mode can be maximally effective — When you explicitly switch to Agent Mode, the AI knows you want action. It can focus on end-to-end resolution rather than hedging every suggestion.
The Trust Ladder
We think about AI trust in infrastructure as a ladder:
- Step 1: AI explains what happened (Ask Mode)
- Step 2: AI suggests what to do (Ask Mode)
- Step 3: AI proposes a plan and you approve it (Agent Mode)
- Step 4: AI executes known runbooks automatically (Agent Mode with pre-approved patterns)
Most teams start at Step 1 and gradually move up as they build confidence. The dual-mode architecture supports this progression naturally — you control how much autonomy the AI has, and you can always step back to Ask Mode when you want to understand before acting.
